Mission Statement / Objectives
Over the last ten years The Middle Dee Project has evolved from an initial adherence to a widely
held belief, that re-stocking the river with hatchery bred juvenile fish, was the answer to the then
diminishing numbers of salmon entering the Dee and salmon rivers in general. Despite the
development of innovative and potentially successful stocking systems, it soon became apparent
that the prevailing conditions within and outwith the burns rendered success unattainable and
much hard work was undone.
Through this came an understanding, that first and foremost, habitat conditions, not stocking, was
the most significant factor. As a result we have suspended our stocking programme until such time
as favourable habitat conditions make it a viable proposition. The operation of the fish counter
within the burn to which we have access will continue and we will seek to widen that activity into
other areas as before. The data from our counters will be posted on this web-site as it becomes
available.
It is our belief that the most important priority at this time, is to actively engage in identifying the
fundamental causes of habitat deterioration, monitor the situation by personal observation on a
regular basis and to ensure that the relevant official bodies are made fully aware of conditions on
the ground. By this we will endeavour to encourage those organizations with responsibility, to act
accordingly in recognising and addressing the causes of the problems rather than just the symptoms.
This we will seek to do and progress will be reported on this web-site on a regular basis.
